Thank you for participating! I started this new service a month ago and more than 120 visitors sent their application. In a minute, I will draw the lucky winner and send notifications to all participants. This month, I changed the rules slightly. As before, it suffices to send a blank email to participate in the drawing. In contrast, I ask you to supply a title for this month's Free Gift. You don't have to in order to qualify, but it would be nice to hear your ideas. Thank you. This month's Free Gift carries the work number 509. All woodcuts I ever made to date were used as invitations to exhibitions. The January Free Gift is no exception. This large work was used for the exhibition poster and the watercolor variations were offered as specials during that exhibition at a commercial gallery. 509 is the exception to that rule. Not only that I don't remember why I did it, I totally forgot that I did it at all. Approximately seven years later, I accidentally hit upon the -- well, my German-English dictionary doesn't help me here, even Webster's doesn't help -- I'll translate it at good guess: "print stock", I mean the piece of wood I worked on to draw the prints from. When I rediscovered this print stock, I was pretty surprised. I issued an edition then for a peculiar kind of exhibition I had at that time. Later, I forgot about it a second time. Last year, I found it again and decided to frame it. Looking into the other room from my desk, I see this woodcut hanging on the wall next to a large painting, and it does really well. I like it very much.
This small woodcut was the first (and for a long time only) work I talked about. It was exiting then to find out something about it, but I don't care so much any more: The work is much more compelling than any words. Try it! You'll find out, too. A nice piece for a first love.
All the best 'til next month. Good Luck. Yours
truly,
