You know, my native language is German (information, not fishing for compliments).

This week, I'll celebrate our well known artist Joe. Joe Doe was chosen to be the featured artist of the month November by ArtQuest. ArtQuest gives away one painting of the featured artist. In this case it is painting 608, and therefore also our painting of the week. On the occasion, I will give some more examples of his art.

Last week, I stumbled upon a new mailing list. I was exhausted with the artist's discussions, longing for meaning, piling arguments on arguments, getting nowhere.

The new list is run by musicians. So many people look for meaning, it's amazing. The term used in this list is spirituality. With music, it's obvious that important things cannot be expressed with words. But it turned out very fast that words also don't have just one meaning.

For example, the world spirituality was not easy to define. Practically everybody on the list had different annotations to this word, depending on their personal life's experience. Compared to this, music seemed to be rather precise a language, although it seemed hard to translate anything expressed in music into words only.

To me, things are closely related with respect to visual arts. Consider for example our painting of the week. I'm really in trouble if I'm asked to tell something about this painting. After all, painting is a visual discipline, you have to see for yourself. Words can open your eyes, though, and art historians are really great in describing paintings and opening your eyes. Today, instead of trying it myself, I'll cite Anne Harris.

Anne visited ArtQuest and wrote me a letter thereafter:

Werner, I looked at Art Quest --SIGNED up for the drawing of your painting---hope I win for it is GREAT.

I looked at all of your work, I don't think I have commented about it to you before. They are all STRONG. Generic man and woman in life's complex struggle. You paint endurance, strength of character, serious responsibility---- the perpetual fight for survival on all levels. I see no joy, gaity, exuberance, but I do see humor, connectedness, compassion and commitment.

Your style fits your "dream" themes perfectly---reminding me of Rouault, Leger, Gauguin, Brague, Buffet and even in feeling, Kaethe Kollwitz. And of course Beckman and Picasso in style.

But it is the content that will survive---live long past your other achievements--you were right in knowing that. It is sort of a TEAM SURVIVAL statement---the male and female elements melding and interchanging to form a unity in which a family can be able to survive and flower. They are powerful statements of the strength of the human spirit.

Admirer, Anne

The strength of character shows as much in your face as in your paintings. Max Roden wrote that we get the face we deserve.

By the way: if you want to see more of the artists Anne refers to, a look at Mark Harden's Artchive or Carol Gerten's Fine Art.

I wrote back to Anne:

> see no joy, gaity, exuberance,

Did you see this sculpture?

oh. Indeed, Indeed.... I had not looked at this section and it made me grin and smile and relax all over. Thanks. Anne

I asked Anne about quoting her letters:

Werner, I'd be honored for you to use anything I write. Maybe you should adjust where I said it lacked joy, etc. for when I saw your sculpture, I realized that you were depicting the human spirit in the whole, with laughter as well as seriousness.

Glad you got the new Dragon and hope it works well for you. I am using it several hours a day in transcribing the hand written letters. Very few mistakes now. Don't work so hard that you have no time for loving fun and enjoyment. Anne

(If you look at the blowup, you can see this sculpture from different sides.)

To give you information on Dragon (remember my musings on dragons in Weekly Work 1.38?, see also dragons referred to in 1.29, 1.30, 1.31, 1.39, , I quote from a letter I wrote to Amit, publisher of Monday Magazine:

Two days ago, I acquired Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I'm training with it now, and I can already say, this is a great tool! I have quite some experience with DragonDictate and this one works slightly different, well, that's not true, I'd rather say significantly different. I suffered so much from DragonDictate, financially and energetically, I was really reluctant.

RSI syndrome forced me to pick up DragonDictate once more. And indeed, with my new, faster machine and larger RAM, it worked fine this time. In fact, much better in the German than in English, which is understandable, as the phonems are quite different. I only had the German edition and had to tweak it a little to use it for my English correspondence, too.

Yes, I typed so much since I'm on the Internet, I got sick. If you're typing a lot, you might give it a try. Make sure you have a fast machine (I think about switching from my 200 MHz board to a faster one) and lots of RAM (upgrading from 64 MB to 128).

This computer is no game machine. I do serious work with it, so I'd rather invest money in my computer than in my car (which is, by the way, in need of some repair easily surpassing the amount of investment, but it doesn't bother me enough).

Time to close this issue, time to remind you of the November contest at ArtQuest. So have a look, surf over to ArtQuest and sign up for the draw end of November!
